17 Summer Must-Haves for your Baby + checklist

Summer is just around the corner, and I can already feel the excitement—longer days, sunshine, and warm breezes.

If you had your little one during winter, by the time summer arrives, they’ll still be tiny. And as much as the idea of sunny strolls and outdoor fun is great, babies and heat don’t mix well.

Newborns can’t regulate their body temperature like we do, making them more vulnerable to overheating, dehydration, and—let’s be honest—some serious fussiness. So, keeping them cool and comfortable isn’t just a nice-to-have—it’s essential.

If you’re wondering what’s actually worth getting to make your baby comfortable in the summer, I’ve put together a list of must-haves to help your baby stay cool all summer long – whether you’re heading out for a walk, spending time in the garden, or just trying to beat the heat at home.

Summer essentials for your Baby

Baby Sunscreen

Your baby’s skin is delicate and more prone to sunburn than an adult’s. A broad-spectrum, mineral-based sunscreen with SPF 30+ provides protection from harmful UVA and UVB rays.

Some very good brands to try include thinkbaby, Babo botanicals, and mustela.

I use the mustela brand for my baby and toddlers and they’ve never had a sunburn after hours on the beach.

Wide-Brim Sun Hat

A wide brim hat is another must-have. Babies lose heat quickly, but their heads are also one of the first places to get sunburned. A lightweight, breathable, and UPF-rated sun hat protects their face, ears, and neck while keeping them cool. If you can, look for a hat with a chin strap to keep it secure and prevent it from getting lost when you are on the move.

Baby Sunglasses

The sun’s UV rays can damage your baby’s developing eyes.

These baby Sunglasses are great and inexpensive to get for your little one. It will protect their delicate eyes and let’s be honest, it also looks really cool. This particular brand has a strap, so its less likely to get lost when you are on the move.

Lightweight, Breathable Clothing

Babies can overheat easily, and summer heat can lead to discomfort or even heat rash. Loose-fitting, cotton or muslin clothing keeps them cool while allowing air to circulate. My baby girl will be in rompers all summer, while the boys will be in shorts and linen shirts or vest which are very breathable.

Muslin Swaddle Blankets

Standard blankets are too thick for summer.

A muslin swaddle is lightweight, breathable, and versatile – use it as a swaddle, stroller shade, nursing cover, or a soft place to lay your baby down.

Baby Water Bottle or Sippy Cup

Dehydration is a real risk in hot weather, especially if your baby is starting solids or over six months. If they are too young for water, extra breastmilk or formula is key.

If they’re old enough, a spill-proof sippy cup will help you keep them hydrated during outings.

Clip-On Stroller Fan

Babies often get overheated fast in a stroller or car seat, so a clip on fan is a great item to have.

A battery-powered, clip-on fan keeps air circulating, preventing sweat and fussiness. Some have misting features for extra cooling.

Pop-Up Beach Tent or Sunshade

Shade is a must when you’re outside for long periods.

I really like this lightweight, UV-blocking tent because it protects your baby from harsh rays and provides a cool, nap-friendly spot. It also comes with mesh sides for extra ventilation, perfect for beach holidays and for your back garden.

Cooling Teething Toys

Summer heat makes teething extra uncomfortable for babies. Keep refrigerated (not frozen!) teethers on hand to help soothe swollen gums while also cooling them down. Water-filled or silicone options are safe and easy to clean.

Swim Diapers

If they’re going to be playing in the pool and water, you definitely need swim diapers. Regular diapers absorb too much water and can become heavy and uncomfortable in the pool.

Swim diapers (disposable or reusable) prevent leaks without soaking up excess water. Look for snug-fitting leg openings to prevent messes.

Baby Pool Float

If you plan on spending time in the pool, a baby-safe float with a sun canopy allows them to enjoy the water safely and comfortably.

Choose one with a secure seat and sturdy handles to keep them in place.

Baby Rash Guard Swimsuit

Instead of applying sunscreen all over, a rash guard swimsuit with UPF protection covers most of their skin and minimizes sun exposure. Look for long sleeves and a zipper for easy diaper changes.

Lightweight Stroller with Ventilation

Thick, padded strollers trap heat, making summer outings uncomfortable. A lightweight stroller with mesh panels and a retractable sunshade improves airflow and prevents overheating.

Baby Bug Spray or Mosquito Net

Mosquito bites are annoying for adults, but they can be miserable for babies. Since many bug sprays aren’t baby-safe, a mosquito net for the stroller or carrier offers the best protection. If using bug spray, opt for DEET-free, plant-based repellents like those with lemon eucalyptus.

Car Window Shade

Summer car rides can get hot, and direct sunlight streaming through the windows can make the backseat uncomfortable for your baby. A car window shade helps block the sun, keeping the car cooler and protecting their delicate skin from UV rays.

After-Sun Lotion or Aloe Vera Gel

Even with all the sun protection in the world, your baby’s skin can still get a little dry from the summer heat. A gentle after-sun lotion or aloe vera gel (baby-safe, of course!) helps soothe any irritation and keeps their skin hydrated.

Mesh Feeder for Frozen Fruit

A lifesaver for hot days! A mesh feeder lets your baby safely enjoy frozen fruit (like mango, banana, or strawberries) without the choking risk. It soothes sore gums and helps them stay cool at the same time.
